We created Eggtracker.co.uk, orignally part of FoodMiles.com, as a way of adding a little transparency to the origin of our eggs. Our site lets you understand a little more about the journey your eggs have taken to get from farm to your table. It will also help you understand the type of eggs that you are eating, be it Organic, Free Range or Battery.
Find the Code
Every egg you buy in the UK that has been "Commercially Farmed" then it has to contain a code which designates the origin farm and the type of egg. To see an example of this code look at our Egg Code Explainer page.
Enter the Code
It's easy as pie, no quiche, to use the tool, just enter the code you find on the egg as well as your postcode and where you got the egg and we will do the rest! In seconds, you should receive information about the egg’s origin, including the rough location of the farm it came from and the food miles it traveled to reach your kitchen.
So What?
Well, now you know. Is it what you expected? Is it nearer or further away? Some of the eggs we have tracked have travelled over 1,000 miles to get to the plate of the person who finally ate them,
Support Local Farmers
By knowing, truely, where your eggs have come from you can make good, maybe better, decisions. Sometimes eggs seem like they are local, when in fact they have come from many miles away.
Understand Food Miles
The shorter the distance your food travels, the fresher it is likely to be. By tracking food miles, you can make choices that reduce your carbon footprint.
Transparency and Trust
In a world where food origins can be obscure, EggTracker offers a little bit of transparency. You can trust that the eggs you consume are coming from nearby.
